As we move into a new year, let’s make further steps towards creating a world where Autistic and other Neurodivergent people are valued as being part of human diversity rather than a pathology to fix. To embrace deviations from neuronormativity rather than to treat them as broken or sick.
A world that identifies our experiences and needs in all stages of life, not just when we are in crisis. How it is possible for us to thrive, not despite being neurodivergent, but because we are. Cultivating a world which validates our experiences and features professionals being truly informed about neurodivergent trauma. One which dismantles the barriers that more marginalised groups in our community face such as nonspeakers, ethnic minority groups and LGBTQ+ neurodivergent people. That we amplify the voices of everyone in the community and meet their human rights.
A world that shifts from conformity and compliance and instead aims for autonomy and self-advocacy. Where we value individuality over assimilation. Such a world would support Autistic and otherwise Neurodivergent people to understand themselves and accept who they are in a neuro-affirming way. Helping us to forgive ourselves for things we were told was wrong with us and give compassion to ourselves.
We strive for a better world than the one we were born into. We build something that will allow future generations to flourish.
